The galaxy’s favorite Sarlacc-surviving bounty hunter is finally back, and it’s clear that Boba Fett has cemented himself atop Jabba’s throne as the Don Corleone of Star Wars’ seedy underworld. A new trailer for The Book of Boba Fett just dropped, and the gritty dive into a galaxy far, far away looks like the perfect gangster companion to the Mandalorian Western.
Fett was last seen in the season two finale of The Mandalorian, where he knocked Bib Fortuna off his pedestal and took over Jabba’s palace alongside the sniper-rifle toting Fennec Shand. Shand returns for the new series, along with a wide range of recognizable Star Wars species known for their criminal tendencies; Trandoshans, Gamorrean guards, and even B’omarr monks are seen scurrying around the desert planet.
Sweeping shots of Mos Eisley — or a similarly wretched hive of scum and villainy — are mixed with crime boss meetings reminiscent of gangster movies, Tusken Raiders emerging from the sand-swept deserts of Tatooine, and some poor soul getting cleaved by a gaffi-stick-wielding Fett.
For anyone who contemplated jumping ship after The Last Jedi, it’s kyber-crystal clear that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have saved the Star Wars franchise and continue to expand the Force-filled universe in the right direction. The upcoming series premieres on Disney+ on Dec. 29, marking the first live-action Star Wars series of 2021.
