A gunman killed eight people and himself late Thursday night at a FedEx shipping facility near the Indianapolis airport. Police say at least five others were injured and were transported or took themselves to local hospitals.
The shooting occurred at roughly 11 p.m. Thursday outside the 24-hour facility.
Police released no identification of the shooter or victims, only confirming the shooter was a man. One witness told the NBC Today show that the gunman carried an “AR”-style rifle.
Several media outlets said unhurt workers were trying to reach family members, a process delayed by rules at the facility that prevent workers from having cell phones on the job.
Police say the gunman first opened fire in the parking lot, where several bodies were found. Authorities say the gunman then tried to enter the facility but did not get deep within the massive facility, which sorts thousands of packages every day.
