101st Airborne Soldier Killed in Training Exercise at Fort Campbell

A soldier with the 101st Airborne Division died when he and another soldier were struck by a military vehicle during a training exercise week at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He is the second soldier to die at Fort Campbell since September.


The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, in a training area, according to local news reports. Spc. James T. Roberts, 26, died, and a second soldier was treated for unspecified injuries. The US Army Combat Readiness Center is investigating the incident.


Roberts was from Nashville, Tennessee, and joined the Army as a military intelligence analyst in 2018. In 2019, he was assigned to 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. He deployed in 2020 to the US-Mexico border for seven months. Roberts had received several awards and decorations, including the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.


Roberts is survived by his wife, son, and mother.


He is the second soldier to die at Fort Campbell in recent months. A Utah-based Green Beret died in September during a Special Forces combat diver preparation course at Fort Campbell’s Joe Swing Park Reservoir.
