The suspect in the shooting death of a Fort Stewart soldier is one of the victim’s fellow “Spartan Brigade” soldiers.
The Army said Friday, Dec. 16, that it had charged Spc. Shay A. Wilson, a 28-year-old infantryman, with one count of murder under Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Officials said Wilson killed Sgt. Nathan M. Hillman, a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist, with a single gunshot from a privately owned weapon.
Both soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, which is known as the Spartan Brigade. The shooting took place at the brigade’s compound. After shooting Hillman, Wilson was overtaken by other soldiers, officials said.
Wilson was arrested by Fort Stewart law enforcement. No motive has yet been released.

Hillman, 30, a native of Plum, Pennsylvania, enlisted in the Army in 2015 and had been at the 2ABCT since July 2021. He was awarded two Army Commendation Medals and two Army Achievement Medals during his service. He also earned the Air Assault Badge.
Wilson, a native of Cambria Heights, New York, has no deployments and no awards or decorations, officials said.
Emergency services on Fort Stewart continue to probe the incident.
